1. Be YOU!

This is my number one rule around blogging for business, because people work with people they like.

Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not when you write. Just be you. Write like you talk. Be weird and quirky. Be nerdy and funny. Be a smart aleck.

If people like you, great. If they don’t, that’s their problem. You don’t want to work with them anyway.

2. Study your competitors

This might sound like I’m contradicting myself – I just said, “Be you”. But hear me out. The reason you want to check out your competitors is so you know what works.

What topics are they blogging about? How long are their blog posts? What keywords are they using? Where are they sharing blog posts and getting the most engagement?

If something is working for your competitors, it will likely work for you, too. After all, you share a target market.

3. Create a schedule you can stick with

One of the saddest sights in marketing is a neglected blog. Once you commit to blogging, you need to stick with it.

At the very least, publish one blog post per month. Two per month is better, and once a week is ideal. Just do what works for you.

4. Write about FAQs

I know it can be daunting to come up with fresh, new ideas to write about. I struggle with it too! My go-to source of topics is FAQs.

Take a few moments to jot down all the questions people frequently ask you. I bet you’ll have a few months’ worth of topics at the ready.

5. Tell client stories

Reviews and recommendations from other people carry a lot of weight. In fact, a whopping 74% of consumers rely on social media to make purchasing decisions. And what are they reading on social media? Reviews and recommendations from friends, family and strangers.

Use that to your advantage in your blog! Interview clients about their challenge, how you solved it and what the result was. Turn it into a fun and engaging story, and people will clearly understand how you can help them, too.

6. Learn how to write a title

Even though we’re told, “You can’t judge a book by its cover,” people do anyway. No one will click on your blog post if the title sucks.

Here’s one formula we use all the time:

Number or trigger word + adjective + keyword + promise

Give it a try and see if it makes a difference.

7. Embrace SEO

Your blog is not the field of dreams. People won’t just walk out of the corn field and find it. You need to make it findable, and that means becoming an SEO ninja. Here’s what to do:

Choose one keyword for each blog post and make sure it appears in:

  • Your blog post title (preferably at the beginning)
  • First paragraph of your copy
  • A couple of more times in your post (but not too often, or you’ll get penalized!)
  • In your meta description
  • In the alt text of your image

8. Share your blog posts everywhere

Now search engines can find your blog post, but there’s a lot more you can do. Share it everywhere! Put it in your email newsletter, post it on social media, publish it on Medium, and share it in groups or forums you belong to.

If it’s an evergreen topic, make a note on your calendar to share it again in three or six months. Keep getting it out there!

9. Invite guest bloggers

Another way to get exposure for your blog is by inviting guest bloggers to publish original blog posts on your site. Once it goes live, they’ll share the heck out of the blog post with their own networks. A new audience means new readers – and potentially new clients.

10. Track results

All of your blogging is for naught if you don’t pay attention to whether or not people are reading them.

Once a month or once a quarter, look at Google Analytics, your email open and click-through rates and your social media engagement. Together, they will paint a picture of what topics people are engaging with and what they’re not. Use this information to tweak your strategy so you can see even better results going forward.
