How to Help Your Website Keep Up with Google Algorithm Changes

Google can be a clever creature. Once you finally figure her out, she up and changes the rules on you – again and again.

While you could hire a full-time Google specialist to keep dibs on the mysterious search engine and give your website a tune-up each time she changes the SEO game, I prefer to keep a few Google tips and tricks in my back pocket instead.

In this post I’ll share some of the best ways to stay on top of Google algorithm changes so your website will stay on top of search results.

Here are four ways to stay in Google’s good graces:

1: Use monitoring tools

The first thing to do is find a tool for monitoring the fluctuations that occur within Googles search rankings. Luckily, many great ones are also free.

Unless you’re a Google engineer or a magical unicorn, you can’t possibly know everything that is going on with Google’s algorithm at any given time. However, these monitoring tools can give you a leg-up on Google’s current search processes; try them out to see which one best suits you:

2: Stay on top of search engine news

Yes, there is actually a segment of journalism devoted to the ins and outs of search engines, so follow the SEO beat.

The key is to sort out the useful information from the speculation, which can be time-consuming. Here are a few trustworthy sites to bookmark for SEO news:

3: Follow experts on Twitter

Besides following the sites mentioned above, you can also follow people on Twitter and other networks who are knowledgeable about SEO, some of whom are magical unicorns, err, Google employees themselves. Here are some of my favs:

4: Use these three timeless SEO rules

As a web copywriters, I can vouch for the fact that some SEO rules will live on forever, regardless of Google’s many transformations. The only thing that might change the way I pursue the almighty Google rank is the resurgence of the long tail keyword, which Hummingbird most definitely alludes to (more on this in future posts).

  1. Keywords are the keys to achieving a good rank, as long as they are carefully placed and used in moderation.
  2. Back links earned through proper SEO still matter.
  3. And, finally – original content that engages your audience is, and forever shall be, king.

If keeping up with Google makes your head spin, or if you simply don’t have the time to stay on top of her shenanigans, leave the web copywriting to the pros so you can focus on your own business!
